Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Favorite Dressy Outfit

I'm totally a jeans girl, or a pants girl - I'm not big on dresses. I like dresses, I find cute dresses all the time - I just don't think that they look cute on me, so I tend to stay away from them. But year before last (Christmas of 2009), I decided to buy a dress for our company Christmas dinner.

I went to Dress Barn and tried on all kinds of dresses until I found one that I just absolutely loved.
I actually started not to try it on at all, because it's one of those tiered dresses that looks like it's going to make you look about 50 pounds heavier, but it was suprisingly flattering and wound up being the dress I took home.
When we went to California this year for a corporate Christmas party, I decided to wear it again, since none of the people going had seen it (or remembered it), and luckily it still fit, so it wound up being a win/win.
The first year I wore it and again last year (2010) - I got SO MANY compliments on it. I hate to wear it again this year, but I'll have to find some place to wear it. It's comfortable and dressy and I can wear a regular bra with it (score)!
It's a light goldish bronze color satin, topped with a soft black lace and has a tiered black bottom.

This is the only picture I have of myself in it. I was at the Christmas party in California.

What's your favorite dressy outfit?

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My New Year's Resolution

I could sit here and say that my New Year's Resolution is to start going to the gym and watch what I eat and lose weight and while all of those are goals of mine, I'm not going to put that kind of pressure on me. Lord knows that pretty much everyone that sets that goal at the beginning of the year is already a loser by the end of January. And I don't mean losing weight! I'm going to keep those goals to myself, and I'll share something else that I'm hoping to get better at... taking pictures. Well, and sending cards. I used to be really good at both but as we get older and life gets busier, I've become a slacker on both accounts. I am going through the (few) pictures that I have of 2010 and I can't find any of D and I together. For the WHOLE year. How did that happen? I have some of Coco and NONE of us. That's just pathetic! So, I'm going to break out my camera more! Then, I want to send more cute cards for holidays. I used to send cards for everything - even Sweetest Day! Most people don't even know that's a holiday, much less when it is. I didn't even get all of my Christmas cards out this year. How sad is that? I went to Shutterfly and found all kinds of adorable cards! Take a look at some of them...

I really want to send out a New Year's card but a friend of mine thinks I'm crazy. What do y'all think? Is there pressure to have them out BEFORE the New Year or is the first or second week in January ok?

Valentine's Day

St. Patrick's Day - D is Irish afterall!
Easter

Halloween

Thanksgiving
Christmas Doesn't Shutterfly have some of the cutest little cards? I love their selection (and their price). Now I need another opinion of yours (honestly) - do you think it's stupid to send out these kinds of cards when we don't have children or do you think that's something I should wait for?
Can't wait to hear what you think!
What is your New Year's Resolution?

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Favorite Christmas Carol

I'm not really in the Christmas spirit this year, as much as I hate to say it. I have enjoyed watching a couple of Christmas movies and I have enjoyed getting Christmas cards and looking at all the wonderful holiday decor that Pottery Barn has in their catalog. Other than that - I've been kind of bah humbug this year! The only thing that I make sure that I do every year is listen to some Christmas music! A local radio station (Sunny 99.1) starts playing Christmas music on Thanksgiving night and plays it 24/7 until Christmas (or New Years, I can't remember). Unfortunately, it hasn't really helped with my Christmas spirit but I have enjoyed listening to some Christmas carols and singing along to some of them.
This makes me think of my favorite Christmas song... Christmas Even Sarajevo 12/24

Have you heard it? It's done by the Trans Siberian Orchestra. I have never been able to see them in concert, but would LOVE to.

This is the very first album that I ever bought of theirs. Christmas Eve Sarajevo is number 8!

This is some of the sheet music.
I couldn't upload the video, but if you click on this link, you should be able to watch it! What's your favorite Christmas song?

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Favorite Christmas Recipe

With Christmas just next week, I'm sure everyone is getting out their cookbooks and making their menus and grocery lists. One thing that is always on our holiday menu is my mother's dressing. Oh, it's delicious. This year, we've opted to have a less traditional "Appetizer" lunch, so it's not likely that this will be on the table, but as delicious as it is - I'm thinking it will probably make an appearance somewhere.

It does take awhile to make, but the results are totally worth it! If you're up for it, here are the directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then, start a large pot of boiling water. Add some salt, pepper, garlic powder, and about 4 chicken bouillon cubes. Take a whole fryer (chicken), and place in the boiling water. You want it to boil for a good while - until your kitchen smells like chicken. But be careful, you don't want all of that liquid to be gone - you'll need it later.

As the chicken is boiling, take 3 boxes of Jiffy corn muffin mix and mix those up. (I believe you need an egg and ¼ of a cup of milk for each box). Mix that up and pour into a greased baking pan or cast iron skillet. Then, stick that into your pre-heated oven.

Fill a small saucepan with water, and boil 4-5 eggs.

While your cornbread is in the oven and your eggs and chicken are boiling, chop up a medium white onion and about 8 celery sticks. Take a medium skillet and put it over medium/high heat and melt a stick of butter. Then, sautee until onions are clear and celery is tender. Set to the side.

When the cornbread comes out of the oven, you want to crumble it up, as best you can. Use a spoon or a fork, so that you don't burn yourself. Add the crumbles to a large mixing bowl. Then add the celery, onions and butter and mix together. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, poultry seasoning and sage.

Peel and chop the hardboiled eggs and add them to the cornbread. Stir until eggs are combined well.

When the chicken is finished, pull it out of the water and place it in a casserole dish to cool. Once cooled, pull the meat off the bone, in shreds and add to the cornbread/vegetable mixture. Mix all together. Add some of the chicken broth to moisten and continue to stir, until everything is combined. Once combined, spoon into a casserole dish and spread out until even. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until golden brown.

Reserve the rest of the chicken broth to moisten dressing, as necessary.

My mother usually makes giblet gravy to go over the top of it, but I don't like giblet gravy so I'm omitting that part. The dressing is delicious and really doesn't need anything else!

Hope you'll make it and find out for yourself! Trust me, it's worth all the trouble!

Happy Cooking!

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Christmas Wish List

Can you believe that Christmas is just 18 days away? It just doesn't seem real to me. Of course, everyone has been talking a lot lately about what they want for Christmas. Initially, I wanted a Cricut machine - for crafting and scrapbooking but the more that I got to looking into it, I changed my mind. You have to continue to buy cartridges for it and there is an ongoing expense to owning that machine. Instead, I found the Silhouette SD machine. It's much like the Cricut machine, but you don't have to buy cartridges - it just plugs right in to your computer. That way, you can use all of the images and fonts that you currently have on your computer or whatever you can download from the internet. Neat, huh?

This is the Silhouette SD machine.

And this is some of the things that you can use it to make!

Vinyl lettering!

I want my front door to look like this!

You can even use it to embellish things you already have - like gift bags and boxes!

You can use it to make temporary tattoos, which happen to be a great way to "label" golf balls and small toys.

You can use it to make adorable cards.

And scrapbook pages!
It's more expensive than the Cricut, but I think it's totally worth the extra money! Instead of printing like a regular printer does, the laser cuts things out. I finally talked D into not exchanging Christmas gifts in lieu of putting money towards paying off our credit cards (again), so this might be on my wish list for awhile!
What do you want for Christmas?

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Favorite "Comfy" Outfit

I don't know about y'all but cold weather means one thing to me... hibernating! I don't want to do a lot except for bundle up in some comfy clothes and a blanket, pop some popcorn and chill out in front of the tv and a fire. The more I think about it...bears really have the right idea! The best part of a lazy day is getting to stay in your pjs or your comfy clothes. I guarantee you - its not cute. I usually have my hair in a pony tail, no make-up on and my glasses on. And Old Navy pjs pants!

Kind of like these, except for mine are normally a little crazier. I have some with reindeer on them, some with beers all over them, I have some Valentine ones, snowflake ones - they are all really cute and really comfy. I don't know about y'all, but here lately... I really look forward to getting in my pjs and relaxing by the fire. Hope y'all are staying warm and cozy!

Tell Me About It Tuesday - What I'm Thankful For

As we approach Thanksgiving, it's pretty normal to think about all of the things that we are thankful for. Amanda and I decided to share with you some of the things that we are thankful for this year. Here are (some of) mine...
  • I'm thankful for Christ and the sacrifice that he made for us.
  • I'm thankful to live in a place where I can openly worship him - even if those around me don't believe the same way that I do.
  • I'm thankful for my family. They are loud and crazy and each one of them more unique than the next and I am blessed to be a part of them. They are opinionated, stubborn, loving and supportive and I know that they have my back - no matter what.
  • I'm thankful for my husband and the relationship that we have and the love that we share. I always assumed that I would get married - but I had no idea that I could experience this much joy with another person and for that, I am especially thankful.
  • I'm thankful for my friends. Some of which are more like family and I'm so lucky to know them. They are all so different but the one thing they all have in common is loyalty. Well, and supportive. This has been a difficult year for D and I but we were shown an outpouring of love and support and we will be eternally grateful for the friends that we have in our lives.
  • I'm thankful for obvious things that we sometimes take for granted - a warm place to lay my head at night, clothes to wear, and food to eat.
  • I'm thankful for my job. This has been a crazy year and we've made a lot of changes but we are really coming over the hill and are better for it. We have a great group of people that are really becoming a family and I'm thankful that I'm a part of that team.
  • I'm thankful for my sweet baby girl Coco. She is more than a dog - she is the sweetest little thing in the world and I absolutely adore her. I don't even want to imagine what my life would be like without her.
  • I'm thankful for things that make my life easier - drive thrus, electric staplers, post its, the iPhone, and I'm especially thanful for Google.
  • I'm thankful for dark nail polish, MAC eyeshadow, Dior lipgloss, Chanel and Gucci perfume and pumpkin shampoo.
  • I'm thankful for Mexican food and margaritas and the good company I enjoy while going out for Mexican food.
  • I'm thankful for it all - I'm thankful that I woke up today and that I can spend another day with my friends and family and D, worshiping God, working, loving on Coco and enjoying all of the materialistic things I don't need, but I love anyway.

I hope you all take some time to remember all of the things that you are thankful for and how blessed we all are - even though its sometimes hard to remember that.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Favorite Thanksgiving Recipe

Thanksgiving is just a little over a week away - already! Can you believe it? We're starting to plan menus and figure out who's bringing what with my family. One of my family's very favorite Thanksgiving Recipes is "Sausage & Rice", for lack of a better name and because its very simply - just sausage and rice. I'm going to share it with you today...
Sausage and Rice

Start with two boxes of Uncle Ben's Long Grain & Wild Rice Just cook the rice according to the directions on the box, which is: Use 4¼ cups of water and 2 tablespoons of butter. Combine them, with the seasoning packet in a medium saucepan on high until boiling.
Then, reduce heat and simmer for about 25 minutes or until all water is absorbed.

While the rice is simmering, open a package of Jimmy Dean's Sage Pork Sausage and brown in a skillet. Break it up as much as you can while browning.
When both are done, drain the sausage and combine them in a casserole dish and wa-lah you have sausage and rice. It's so quick and easy and it's delicious - especially beside some cranberry sauce. You know the kind I'm talking about - that takes the shape of the can!
Delicious! What's your favorite Thanksgiving recipe?

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Siblings

I am the middle child, of three girls. I have an older sister (4 years older than me) named Melanie and a younger sister (2 years younger than I am) named Meredith.

Meredith, Melanie and my mom (Melissa) July 2010
Melanie and Meredith at my house for Easter 2010
It's kind of funny but Melanie is a natural blonde, I'm a natural brunette and Meredith is a natural red head. (Both of my parents are natural brunettes - but my mother had died her hair red for like 20 years)
Melanie Leigh Martin
Melanie is more reserved than Meredith and myself. It takes her a little longer to feel comfortable and start mingling with people that she doesn't know but she is more apt to be sociable when there are some people (like family) around. She is easily embarrased and turns bright red when she is. She doesn't think we realize it but she (pretends to) yawn when you tell her something she doesn't want to hear. She always asks for your opinion but has a hard time accepting it (hence the yawn). She is much more cautious than the rest of us and thinks about things for a long time before she makes decisions. She's a worrier. She is very smart and good with numbers. She is goal oriented and can see the bigger picture. Even though we're grown she still calls Meredith and I "the little kids" sometimes when talking to mom and I think its sweet. She still worries about us and wants to protect us and "keep us safe". She isn't a very patient person but is a wonderful mother and is raising a son that's going to grow up to be exactly like her. She takes after my dad the most, and is so stubborn! She cares way too much what people think of her but she's a caring, generous person and a loyal friend. She's funny and a joy to be around and I couldn't ask for a better big sister!

Meredith Page Abke
Meredith is the most outgoing of all of us. She is more reserved than she used to be, but she can still get pretty roudy at times. She's also very smart and good with numbers. She has a bit of ocd and even balances her checkbook to the penny (and uses white out if necessary)! She is funny and a huge smart alleck. She is thoughtful and giving but also lacks a lot of patience. She is a good combination of both of our parents. - Stubborn and hardheaded and giving. She used to be a little selfish, but she has grown out of that. She's an extremely loyal person and a good friend. She is very driven and when she sets her mind to something, there is no changing it. She's always very put together and loves to shop! She tries to be strong, but I think she's the most emotional out of all of us. She has a harder time dealing with difficult things and often removes herself from the situation. She has always resented us calling her "the baby". She is a hard worker and wants to take care of everyone. She is extremely organized. She's funny and loud and always a blast to be around and I'm so glad that I can be her big sister.

I am incredibly lucky to have the sisters that I have. When we're all in the same room together, we all seem so different but we somehow manage to all "get" each other and have stayed really close, through going to college, coming back, moving, marrying, children, etc. I hope that we can always maintain such a great relationship. These girls are two of my very best friends and I love them both dearly!

Tell Me About It Tuesday - My Parents

This week - Amanda and I are going to tell you all about our parents.
Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of pictures on my computer of my parents, so I'm going to use what I have...

This is my older sister Melanie and my dad on her wedding day December 31, 1999.
My dad was born June 15th, 1948 in Wichita Falls, TX. His dad was killed in an accident when we was just 6 months old. His mom later remarried and his "step" dad considered him his own son and my dad considered him his dad. They were very close. My dad got in with the wrong crowd not long after high school and starting blowing off his college classes, and my grandpa told him that he needed to leave town to make a better life for himself and get away from the guys he was hanging around. When he was 2 years out of high school, he moved to Houston with his uncle and started in the tile business. Not long after that, he got a job in the mailroom of a company and wound up teaching himself drafting. He worked as an entry level draftsman and then made his way up to General Manager of one of the largest metal building companies in the United States. He left there in 1996 to start his own company. My dad was always a work-a-holic and loved what he did. He enjoyed going to work everyday and was passionate about what he did. He became very sick in 2000, right after I graduated high school He closed his business in early 2007 and passed away on April 23, 2007 at the age of 58. He taught me so much! He taught me to stand up for what I believe in, regardless if you stand alone. He taught me to always work hard and pay your own way. You can't take pride in letting someone do all the work for you. He taught me to do what's right even when it's the hardest choice and to be a good person. Sometimes, your character is all that you have, and you want to be proud of the person you are.
My dad was strict and sometimes stern. He made sure that we knew how proud of us he was but that he also expected a lot because he knew that we were up for the challenge. There wasn't a second that I ever doubted his dedication to his family and I can say that I owe my work ethic and character to him. He was so funny and he loved to be around people. He enjoyed gatherings and parties and he loved to share everything that he had. He was a giver - He was so generous with everyone around him and would literally give you the shirt of his back. He didn't feel sorry for people but he did feel bad about their situations and he would do anything to help them out of it. I know that I'm a more mature and responsible person today because of him. I love him and miss him terribly and feel regret for all of the people that never had a chance to know him.
This is my mom and little sister, Meredith on her wedding day, October 10, 2009. My mother was born on October 15, 1953 in San Antonio, TX. She was the youngest of six children and when her abusive dad passed away when she was a freshman in high school, she quit school and got a job to help her mom make ends meet.
She married at the age of 18 and stayed in another abusive relationship for about 5 years before getting divorced and moving to Houston. She went to beauty school and worked in a couple of salons around town and moonlighted as a bartender when my dad and her first got together. They were married about 2 years later. She went to night school and received her GED and continued to expand her knowledge and skillset in the "beauty" world. She became a licensed nail technician while she continued to do hair and then she bought her own salon. She owned and operated that salon in the Champions Forest area of Houston until my dad and her decided to buy land and build a house in Waller and she sold the salon. She oversaw the day to day operations of the home building and made sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to, and the way she wanted it done. She stayed at home for awhile, fixing up her house. Shortly after that, she went to work as a para professional for the school district and then applied for the art teacher job at a local elementary school. She worked as the art teacher until my dad's business started growing so much that he needed extra help so she quit and went to work for him in the accounting department. Actually, she was the accounting department! She worked with him for the next 5 or 6 years, but also started working with the school district as a bus driver and she would rush home on all of her breaks to check on him and take care of him. For the last 5 years of his life, she did everything for him - showered, shaved, dressed, cooked for him, took him to appointments, managed his medicine and his physical therapy. She was a full time, wife, mother, nurser, and worker and she did it all with a smile on her face. I can honestly, without a shred of doubt say that she is the most unselfish person I know. She will do anything for anyone at any time because that's who she is. Not because she wants or expects anything in return but because her heart is made of solid gold. She is caring, creative and compassionate. She is outgoing, funny and a blast to be around. She is supportive and encouraging and I couldn't ask for a better mother or best friend. I learned to be a nurterer from her. I learned to be caring and be concerned about other people from her. I learned that sometimes we do things we don't want to do because it helps other people and the feeling you get afterward is all the encouragement you should need. I learned that sometimes, a hug and a kiss make it all better and even if they don't - it can't hurt!
Both of my parents were/are a joy to the people around them and I couldn't ask for better parents. Before my dad died, they celebrated 31 years of marriage together. They are a great example of love and strength and I'm not only lucky to have parents like them, I am honored to be one of their children.

Can't wait to read all about your parents,
